Happy Birthday Mr. Kang

This week's spelling words are schwa words.
What is the schwa sound? In multi-syllable words, one syllable gets primary stress
and the others are either unstressed or given secondary stress. Often, vowels will
be pronounced as a neutral schwa. The schwa sound says, "uh". The schwa is the
most commonly spoken vowel in English, accounting for 20% of all vowels uttered.
Here are some examples of words with the schwa sound:

The letter a: about, banana
The letter e: open, travel, item
The letter i: animal, family
The letter o: above, gallon, dinosaur, another
The letter u: circus, particular

When a short or long vowel sound doesn't work, try the schwa sound. It's a
fun sound. It's like the short u sound, or the sound a person makes when he or she
is thinking. Of course vowels and vowel combinations make many more sounds, but
the schwa sound is common and worth a try.
